How to convert JSON to YAML manually

Prefer scripting this in a pipeline? Here are the most common CLI and library approaches.

Install a CLI locally

npm install -g js-yaml
# or
pip install pyyaml

Convert a file with Node.js

import yaml from 'js-yaml';
import fs from 'node:fs';
const data = JSON.parse(fs.readFileSync('in.json', 'utf8'));
fs.writeFileSync('out.yaml', yaml.dump(data));

Convert a file with Python

import json, yaml
with open('in.json') as f: data = json.load(f)
with open('out.yaml', 'w') as f: yaml.safe_dump(data, f, sort_keys=False)

Frequently asked questions

Is my JSON sent to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. The page never uploads your JSON anywhere — you can verify this by opening DevTools → Network tab and watching that no request fires when you click Convert.

Why does my YAML look different from what the online converter produced?

YAML has multiple valid representations for the same data — block style vs flow style, single vs double quotes, anchors vs repeated values. Our converter uses block style with double-quoted strings where ambiguity would otherwise arise (e.g. strings that look like booleans). Both outputs are semantically identical.

Does it handle JSON with comments (JSONC)?

No, because strict JSON doesn't allow comments. If you have a `tsconfig.json` or `.vscode/settings.json` with `//` comments, strip them first — or paste the result into our JSON Formatter, which tolerates JSONC and emits clean JSON you can then feed here.

What's the file size limit?

There's no hard limit — we've tested the converter with 50 MB JSON files. Performance depends on your device. On a modern laptop, a 10 MB JSON file converts in ~300 ms.

Can I convert YAML back to JSON?

Yes. Use our dedicated /convert/yaml-to-json/ page, or the same underlying JSON Converter tool with the input/output toggles swapped.
